Nicht immer wollte der Geburtshelfer den Muttermund unmittelbar bis zur Vollständigkeit (10 cm Durchmesser) öffnen. Oft reichte ihm die Einleitung der Geburt. Dazu reichte eine mehrere Stunden anhaltende mässige Dehnung des Muttermundes auf einen Durchmesser von 1 - 4 cm.
Vorgestellt wird ein 31.5 cm langer, auf 4 cm zu spreizender Zervixdilatator mit 2 Branchen, benannt nach dem amerikanischen Geburtshelfer William Hutson WATHEN, Professor der Geburtshilfe und "dean" d.h. Dekan der medizinischen Fakultät der "Kentucky School of Medicine" in Louisville / Kentucky (USA). Von 1886-1889 bewohnte er Haus 1252 der Third Street West Side. Seine Praxis hatte er 405 W Chestnut, ab 1895 in Haus 628.5 4th St.

In der Bekämpfung des illegalen Schwangerschaftsabbruches war er unerbittlich:
"Dr. W.H. Wathen of Louisville suggested that doctors "ostracize any man who will produce a criminal abortion".
