"Ténotomy, s.f. Syn. Ténontotomie, opération qui consiste à sectionner un tendon pour redresser un membre, un segment de membre (pied bot) ou un organe (œil atteint de strabisme). On applique également ce terme à la brides section fibreuses cicatricielles qui gènent certains mouvements ou maintiennent un membre ou un segment de membre en mauvaise position »(M. The experience during the Napoleonic campaigns had the French surgeons make bold. The research was fostered by the problem of "clubfoot" by several prominent patients

On this background, the Achillo tenotomy was invented in 1816 by Jacques Mathieu DELPECH (1777-1852). The technique was extended to other misalignments, as Jules René GUérin (1801-1886) spread the view that all deformities are due to muscle shrinkage. In Germany, too, the method found its zealots. Johann Friedrich DIEFFENBACH (1792-1847), Georg Friedrich Ludwig STROMEYER (1804-1876) severed his foot and eye muscles.

For the intervention of the tendon separation writes the Larousse médical 1924:
"Indications: Contracture ou rétraction musculaire entrainant une difformité (pied bot) ou une gêne fonctionnelle (strabisme, torticollis.
Opération: Elle se fait par la méthode sous-cutanee; on introit le ténotome à plat par une incision faite dans un plis de la peau, puis on le gliss au dessus ou au dessous du tendon, jusqu'à ce qu'on soit parvenu à son bord opposé; on retorn alors l'instrument et on sectionne par pression ».
